Simply put, a credit union is made up of individuals who come together to provide a safe place to save and borrow at reasonable rates. It's people helping people. Someone who joins a credit union is called a member. Members pool their funds to make loans to one another. When you join a credit union, you purchase a “share” by making a deposit into a savings account. By making that deposit, you become a part owner of that financial institution. Any profits that the credit union realizes, after operating expenses are paid, are given back to the members/owners in the form of dividends (or interest). The volunteer board of directors that runs each credit union is elected by the members. Not for profit, not for charity, but for service is a credit union motto.
